Crowns are used in times when a tooth is badly broken, weak or damaged.
In cases such as these, a crown can be placed over the damaged tooth to restore its original size, shape and strength, as well as improving its appearance. Crowns can be made from metal, ceramic or a mixture of both and they restore your tooth to its natural look and feel.
The Process
How We Place a Crown
Having a crown put in place will normally take 2 appointments.
1st Visit
During the first visit we will prepare the damaged tooth and make impressions of your mouth which we use to custom build your new crown. We will also place a temporary crown until we create your permanent crown.
2nd Visit
The second appointment will take place 2 weeks later. During this time we fit your new specially crafted crown and make any adjustments so your bite feels and looks natural.
Crowns are generally made from different materials depending on where it will be placed. Crowns made from ceramic are popular because they look more like natural teeth. However, if your crown will be placed near the back of your mouth, we may make your crown from a metal alloy.
Will the treatment hurt?
We use a local anaesthetic during the procedure so your experience should be mostly pain free, though you may have some slight sensitivity for a short period of time after the crown is placed but it should settle within a few days.
How do I take care of my new crown?
It’s easy to take care of a new crown because it’s just like looking after your natural teeth. Regular brushing and flossing keeps the crown clean and debris free and helps keep the surrounding gums healthy. Occasionally, a crown may need a slight adjustment but otherwise it should look and feel strong and natural.
