There are two types of gum disease: gingivitis which is a general inflammation of the gums and the more serious periodontal disease, which infects the gums and the bone beneath it. Both types can usually be prevented by practising good oral hygiene and by visiting your dentist regularly, but infections still occur.
If you are suffering from gum disease there are a variety of ways our North Hill Dental team can treat it and restore your smile.

Generally speaking, gum disease is the term most commonly used for soreness, swelling or infection of your gums.
Gingivitis is a common and mild form of gum disease that affects the gingiva, or the part of the gum surrounding the base of your teeth.
Periodontal disease is more severe and can infect not only your gums but also the supporting bone beneath it.
Your North Hill Dental hygienist will check for gum disease by measuring the ‘cuff’ of the gum around each tooth, checking for any signs of periodontal disease.
In cases where periodontal disease is found we may take x-rays to see how much, if any, bone has been lost.
