Inside each of your teeth is what is known as the ‘pulp’ which contains nerves and blood vessels. Sometimes if gum disease is left untreated, the pulp can be damaged (pulpitis) which can be incredibly painful and cause increased sensitivity to heat or cold, discolouration of your tooth, tender gums, swelling or a bad taste in your mouth.
If you are suffering from pulpitis we can perform a root canal which will stop the pain, protect your tooth from any further damage and reduce the risk of losing the tooth completely.
All of our dentists at North Hill Dental in Colchester are trained in the most up-to-date techniques and technologies to make the treatment as pain free as possible. Local anaesthesia is used to numb the area and, in cases where the pulpitis is more severe, your dentist may also ‘settle’ the tooth with a sedative dressing, anti-inflammatory drugs and/or antibiotics before the treatment begins.
Root canal treatments have a very high success rate, especially when performed by one of our highly skilled North Hill dentists. Keeping the area clean with a thorough oral hygiene routine will help reduce the risk even further. However, despite everyone’s best efforts, there are rare times when the infection does return and the treatment will need to be repeated.
